XBox Support – Preventing the Red Ring of Death
Hey guys, Mark here
I have had my XBox fail twice on me because of the Red Ring of Death (RROD) before I found these tips. This is seriously one of the scariest things that has happened to me, especially because I play Call of Duty fairly competitively. So seriously, save yourself the hassle and follow these red ring of death prevention tips.
a. Keep your XBox out of a cabinet. XBox generates a lot of heat, and if the heat is stuck in the cabinet, bam - downtime.
b. Keep dust out of your XBox with a contact cleaner. If dust is blocking the vents, your system might overheat.
c. Put your XBox 360 on it's side, not vertically. If you stand it up vertically, you are blocking one of the main vents.
d. Leave it in a well ventilated area and away from other objects which may give off heat (such as stereo equipment).
e. Keep your XBox off the carpet, the heat will just go back up into the XBox.
If you're already getting the RROD, now is not the time to be checking these tips out, though. The first time I sent my XBox into Microsoft XBox Support and I got it back 4 weeks later, and it cost me 160$. I'm a professional gamer though, and that really screwed me on some solid practice time. The second time, I got it working by myself in just under 1 hour with the guide I mentioned right below this post, James Dean's XBox Repair Guide. I seriously recommend checking it out, it saved me in a time of dire (gaming) need.

XBox Support Article: E74 Error
The E74 error (the one light red ring of death) is an aggravating error that many gamers have encountered.
What is the cause of the e74 error?
The XBox E74 error is not a very fun error to deal with. The e74 error is generally caused by overheating, or other hardware failures.
How can I fix this error?
You can send it into Microsoft XBox Support, where they will charge you for it and have you ship it to them. While this will be a guaranteed fix, it does cost a lot of money and takes a lot of time. This is why XBox Support dot net's official position is to use a repair guide. The E74 error is pretty easy to fix, and generally speaking it can be fixed in an hour if you do it at home. XBox Support has a great solution, James Dean's XBox Repair Guide, which will help you solve this error. If you're interested, see the above article about James Dean's XBox Repair Guide.

Teaches you how to fix other errors too, such as E74 error
Free video that instructs you through the process
Clear instructions that lay it out in EBook format (step 1, step 2, step 3)
Cons:
You will have to take apart your Xbox, but all repair guides will have you do this. However, it is as your own risk.

Fix Scratched XBox CDs
Alright, I got a little antsy and had to start writing my first article right away. I feel obliged to give as much xbox 360 support as I possibly can. So here it is, my tutorial to fix scratched XBox CDs. I have several methods for fixing all sorts of scratches. Please note that none of these are 100% certain and that you are doing so at your own risk.
Step 1 - CLEAN THE DISK
The first step to fixing any disc problem is to clean the disk first.
Here are some ways that I have found work great for cleaning. You can try any of these.
a. Use a very soft, clean, dry paintbrush to lightly dust off anything that might stuck on the disk.
b. Run warm water over the disk.
c. If it is still stuck after using these methods, then try to use some liquid dish soap (with water) or rubbing alcohol (no water) while gently rubbing from the middle of the disk to the outside, ANY OTHER WAY COULD DAMAGE THE DISK FURTHER.
After cleaning the disk, let it air dry. Then try to play the disk. If this did not work, I strongly suggest taking it to a local place that will clean disks such as GameStop. However, if you are intent on doing it yourself here are some other methods.
Method #1: Toothpaste - This will clean a semi-circular scratch
As a warning, this should be used as a last resort. It can actually damage your disk more.
- Apply a small amount of toothpaste (must be paste, not gel) or Brasso to a soft, clean, lint-free (old undershirt) cloth: an eyeglass-cleaning cloth works well.
- Gently rub the cloth on the scratch or scuff in a radial motion, (start at the center and rub out to the edge, like spokes on a wheel). Do this 10 or 12 times all around the CD. Rubbing in a circular motion can cause small scratches that throw off the laser tracking system in the player. Try to focus your efforts solely on the scratch or scratches you’ve identified (if possible).
- Polish in this manner for a couple of minutes, reapplying Brasso or toothpaste to the cloth as necessary. Be careful not to apply much pressure, although you will still be able to feel the cloth gently scratching the CD as it polishes.
Here is a wonderful video I have found on YouTube about the toothpaste method:
